I’m doing an internship this summer with Clear Channel Portsmouth, a conglomerate of stations ranging in all different types of genres and styles: Our popular music stations KISS 95.3 + WERZ 107.1, rock stations WHEB 100.3 + ROCK 101.1, easy listening WAVE 96.7, and news and sports talk stations Sports Animal AM930 + WGIR AM 610. I’m one of five interns at Clear Channel Portsmouth. My job consists of assisting radio talent at promotional events for all of our advertisers and doing studio work during a New Hampshire Fisher Cats Game.

So far, these promotional events have been lots of fun and a great learning experience. I’ve found out quickly that each event is unique and every advertiser or organization hosting an event wants something different from the radio station they have chosen. It’s also very, very clear the differences in audiences that each station draws.

Saturday May 26th, I assisted one of our KISS 95.3 DJ ShawnnyO at a new advertiser event. We were responsible for providing the music for the first race of the Atlantic Paddle Battle series at Salisbury Beach, outside SurfSide 5. It was my job to unload and assemble all of the sound equipment, as well as, photograph the event for the station’s website. We handed out a ton of great prizes and the advertiser was very pleased with how the event turned out.

This past Friday the 31st, I had a crazy day of promotional events. My first event was the Grand Opening of new store in our local mall named PDQ Studios with KISS 95.3 DJ KWOW. Our job was to draw attention to the new store and help drum up some interest. My responsibilities were again taking photos as well as running a video contest for KISS. PDQ Studios is a make your own music video experience. KISS 95.3 is hosting a “Voice of the Seacoast” Contest on our website, so as people arrived, I was responsible for having them sign waivers.  The videos they produced will be loaded to our site. While the event wasn’t as busy as PDQ had hoped, they were pleased with the publicity that KISS brought in.

The Clear Channel Portsmouth Flagship WHEB also had an event in the Mall Friday.  So Intern Kat packed up all the sound equipment and carried it all to the other end of the mall for a Celtics vs Heat Viewing Party at Buffalo Wild Wings. My responsibilities here were to man the prize table (full of all sorts of goodies) that our radio talent Gregg from “Gregg and The Morning Buzz” (a mega radio star in New Hampshire) was giving away throughout the game. I photographed the event for our website and helping Gregg come up with contests during timeouts and commercial breaks. One of my personal favorites, and by far the most complicated game I created for BWW was Celtics math.  We give the listener 3 Celtics players old or new and they have to give you the sum of their jersey numbers. (So example: Larry Bird + Rajon Rando – Paul Pierce. Would be 33+5-9 = the answer is 29.) Very fun game. At the end of the night, I packed up all the sound equipment one last time and loaded it back into the Large WHEB van and headed back over to the station to upload the pictures from both events onto the separate websites and facebooks.

The last event for this week happened yesterday. WHEB and ROCK 101’s annual event SKYSHOW takes over Arms Park in Manchester, NH and invites local and nationally know rock bands to play. On average, SKYSHOW can sell as many as 10,000 tickets to spectators. But yesterday it was pouring rain. Only an estimated 800 came out to the show. As an intern, I was placed in charge of making sure each of the 6 bands were happy while acting as security for the band bus area. This basically meant standing in the pouring rain all day insuring that no one got into the area reserved for All Access Pass holders only. Quite a chilly, soggy day as a radio intern.

Overall, I’m excited to do more studio work as the summer goes on and I can wait to see what else Clear Channel Portsmouth has in store for me.
