“Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” – Special Olympics Motto
I’ve been volunteering with SONH.org since the fifth grade and look forward to helping out at the State Summer Games at UNH every June. It’s a really special reunion of athletes, coaches, families, sponsors and volunteers every year. I’ve seen incredible athletes give their all and witnessed beautiful examples of sportsmanship, team work, and heart. The 38th Annual Special Olympic Winter Games just finished at Waterville Valley and the 45th State Summer Games will be held May 29-May 31, 2014 in Durham.
This weekend the Margate Resort hosted the Sixth Annual Winni Dip and first ever High School Winni Dip. I’ve never seen anything like it. Students, teachers and parents dressed in their best Prom Attire leaped into Lake Winnipesaukee to raise $12,000 for SONH. It was 27 degrees out and there were icebergs floating in the water. Mark Ericson and Karen Kiley from WOKQ’s Morning Waking Crew (VOTE for Mark and Karen in the Best of New Hampshire here https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/J3PKKN8 and http://www.nhmagazine.com/Best-of-NH) did an incredible job hosting ceremonies on Lake Winnipesaukee and in the Margate Ballroom (where Hart’s Turkey Farm catered a delicious after party).
Congratulations to the forty-nine students from more than a dozen different school districts who were absolutely heroic in their Winni Dip to support Special Olympians.
